More than just a Legend of Xiao Long Bao!
Holding court for its legendary fusion Xiao Long Bao, Paradise Dynasty has more to offer that is just as exquisite as its legend. Under the umbrella of the Paradise Group, Paradise Dynasty is one of the latest offspring that made its mark in PJ’s latest mall, Paradigm Mall together with another sibling Kungfu Paradise. Echoing its earlier sibling of Paradise Inn in Sunway Pyramid, Paradise Dynasty is another level of elegance in Chinese Cuisine.
The moment one enters, Paradise Dynasty is ready to impress with its grandeur and opulence ambience, taking one back into the era of royalty. It pays tribute to the ever famous Xiao Long Bao injected with a fusion twist and serves up impeccable La Mians and more. The first in Malaysia, Paradise Dynasty certainly takes the cake for creativity in presenting a truly unique sensory and dining experience.
An impressive and massive statue of Buddha with a glowing halo commands one’s attention upon entering the main dining area. Gorgeously decorated with lots of cubicles and private booths all set with dark wood. Themed in gold, red and dark brown, one certainly can’t help but be amazed at the sheer magnificence of the ambience at Paradise Dynasty. On the side is a glass enclosed open kitchen for a little entertainment from the chefs in actions.
The contemporary and clean lines of chandeliers and hanging lamp pieces bring forth a golden glow in the whole room. Private rooms are also available for business entertain or simply a more personal family or friend gatherings.
Be prepared for a long feast to come…
We certainly got what we came for… the legendary Xiao Long Bao! Strikingly beautiful at sight, all the varieties of Xiao Long Baos is represented as Signature Dynasty Xiao Long Bao (RM23.80). With an astonishing eight flavors, pamper to your heart’s content with Orginal, Foie Gras, Black Truffle, Crab Roe, Ginseng, Cheesy, Garlic, and Szechuan.
Each bite has its own distinctive flavors so sharing is the least one wants to do here! We were recommended to savor these without the usual ginger shreds first to enjoy the respective flavors of the dumplings. My favorites were Foie Gras, Crab Roe, Cheesy and Sze Chuan. The dumplings had a good amount of hot broth so make sure to savor this carefully. The skin was of decent thinness while the amount of filling was sufficient for a good burst of flavors and textures. One can also order the individual flavors in orders of 6 pieces or 10 pieces.
A first for me, I must admit that it’s quite an interesting starter. Chilled Assorted Egg Loaf in Yang Zhou Style (RM12.80) is essentially chilled custard of chicken eggs, century eggs and salted eggs. The egg loaf has a lot of textures going on with the smooth egg custard holding the slightly wobbly century egg and creamy sandy salted egg yolk. Surprisingly gentle in flavors with a savory finish, the threesome makes the dish a stunner at sight.
Chilled Cucumber in Garlic Vinaigrette (RM8.80) has a sloppy outlook but one is rest assured that it is refreshing with lots of pungent garlicky flavors and hints of sourness. Crunchy and vibrant, makes a nice starter unless you are on a first date!
Don’t get me drunk but I’ll gladly take the Drunken Chicken (RM16.00) anytime! It’s all about the smoothness of the tender chook marinated in Shao Tsing wine, making this dish utterly delectable in every bite. I like the heavy Chinese wine flavor in the dish and the glorious smooth skin of the chook. Hats off to the chef for this chilled starter!
Paying homage to pork fans, one simply must order Sliced Pork in Garlic and Soya Sauce (RM16.00). Poached pork belly slices are neatly rolled with crisp julienned cucumber and doused with a spicy sour garlic sauce. Served chilled, each sumptuous piece of pork roll was a medley of flavors. I would have loved to hog this whole plate to myself!!
It used to be customary to enjoy rice cake during a new year but I am also glad one can now enjoy them anytime. Wok Fried Rice Cake with Minced Pork and Vegetable (RM16.00) mimicked the infamous Hokkien style flavors. A medley of shredded pork, cabbage, and mushroom mingled with the tender rice cake beautifully, providing a textural delight of crunchy, chewy and softness to the dish. A good aroma of breath of wok was duly noted together with the sweet aroma of soy sauce.
Scrambled Egg White with Fish and Dried Scallop (RM20.00) is meant to be savored piping hot. The silky and fluffy scrambled egg white is served with a raw egg yolk, dried scallop and a tinged of black vinegar. Mix them all together to enjoy a creamy and light fluffy egg with a savory touch. At last, it was our fault that we took too many photos and the dish got cold so make sure to savor this hot for the full pleasure effect!
A spicy concoction of Pork Dumpling in Chili Sauce (RM11.80) is a guaranteed dish to spice up some heat on one’s taste bud. Succulent morsels of pork dumplings bathe in a pool of chili oil are definitely enjoyable for those who love a good robust flavor.
Braised Pork Belly (RM26.80) is definitely catered for a wider general pool of hog lovers. The beautifully braised cubes of pork belly sit in a brown savory pool of moreish gravy with some greens. Carefully selected to ensure that every cube has the essential requirement of equal layers of pork fat and lean meat only added another perfectionist note on the dish. Drool worthy and a dish guaranteed to please foodies of all ages!
I simply cannot get enough of Deep Fried Diced Chicken in Szechuan Style (RM20.00)! Positive highlights on the dish here lies on where I could actually see more chicken than dried chili unlike some of others that I have tried. A myriad of crispy battered chicken had the zesty heat from the chili partnering with pungent garlic and salty flavors. Simply addictive with a beer or even rice… J
More dumplings, this time Pan Fried Pork Dumpling (RM7.80) took form in a half pan searing and half steam cooking style. Evoking a partnership of crispy seared skin with steamed soft skin, the dumpling had loads of juice squirting out upon first bite. Sufficient to say, this dumpling is essentially a version of Xiao Long Bao seared to a crispy end. My only advice is to beware of juices flying when indulging in this dumpling!
Noodles and oodles of it by measure! La Mians are also their specialty together with their signature pork bone soup. Expect al dente cooked noodles and an intense protein laden milky broth simmered for twelve hours of intensification of flavors. Choices are plenty with a total of 19 choices ranging from various broths to dried version and stir fry as well.
Kicking off the lot is a back-to-basic dry version of La Mian with Dried Shrimp and Scallion (RM12.00). A dish that simply screamed simplicity at its best, the noodle had a fragrant aroma of the dried shrimp and scallion. Gentle but satisfying!
La Mien with Pork Dumpling in Chili Sauce (RM15.80) was just a version of the earlier spicy pork dumpling now being put together with noodles. A dish that rated average in my books simply because I prefer the dumplings on its own.
La Mien with Pan Fried Chicken Chop (RM16.80) fared better as the meaty broth was sweet and tasty when paired with the noodles. Of course, the side of crispy fried chicken chop makes this noodle even better.
Now I would gladly slurp up La Mien with Braised Pork Belly (RM18.80) anytime! A true tribute to their signature pork bone soup, the broth was lusciously creamy and superbly rich in pork flavors. The rich consistency in the milky broth laden with loads of collagen leaves a pure sticky goodness sensation on one’s lips after a few sips. With a broth so opulent, it makes the noodles glide down the throat with a breeze. Half an egg with a creamy uncooked egg yolk made the dish even more luxuriant. Let’s not forget to pay homage to the precious braised pork belly slices…tender and ridiculously delicious in every bite!
Enough of my mad ranting… just go and get one bowl now!!
Another tough competitor in the La Mian category is the La Mien with Stewed Beef Brisket (RM18.80). Usually doused in a heavier and oily based soup, the version here is really executed to my taste. The broth is a spicy based broth but I could taste the meaty goodness in the broth. Not overly spicy but a level well bearable, I was actually quite addicted to the broth. Hitting high points was the melt-in-the-mouth beefy brisket. Tender but yet a little firm, the pieces of fairly lean brisket was almost buttery in flavors. One of the best beef la mian I have savored in a while!
Although Shanghai Fried Rice (RM16.00) tasted average, I could find no fault on the rice. It had a good breath of wok but I just didn’t feel this shouting out to me.
The star of the night was Radish Pastry (RM7.80)! To think that this simple sounding pastry could shook up one’s taste bud is really a surprise to me. One bite and you get an ultra-flaky, buttery and melt-in-mouth pastry that really stole the show in the dish. Of course, the sweet shredded radish filling helps in flavors but I am really lost for words at how amazing the pastry tasted. Words of mine cannot do justice for this pastry so you really have to experience how sensational this pastry is. Heck, I really do have to go back for this soon… it’s just simply too Irresistible!
It’s a signature and due to tedious method of the Radish Pastry, there is only a limited number made each day. Make sure to go early and order this to avoid disappointment. Simply a Must-Order at Paradise Dynasty!
Gosh, I think the pastry chef here does absolute wonders with pastries. Another impressive pastry is a classic version of Deep Fried Scallion Pastry (RM5.60). This time, the pastry is different from the radish pastry but equally worth its weight in gold. Lighter and even flakier, the pastry encased a pungent filling of scallions, concluding that a classic will always remain a classic!
After the last two fabulous pastries, I was definitely looking forward to desserts. Out-of-the-ordinary dessert category was a house signature SoufflĂ© Egg White Balls Stuffed with Red Bean and Banana (RM8.00). Gorgeously light and fluffy on the outside, it was like biting into a fluffy airy cloud filled with a creamy mash of sweet red bean and banana. I would gladly eat the banana (I don’t like banana btw) just to enjoy the fluffy soufflĂ©!
Pan Fried Pumpkin Pastry (RM6.90) tasted similar to our Chinese Nian Guo. It had a similar slightly chewy texture in addition to the creamy sweet root.
Red Bean Pancake (RM8.80) is another traditional dessert. Rated satisfactory, the pancake has a thin crispy golden skin filled with creamy red beans.
We also savored Chilled Mango Pudding (RM8.00) and Chilled Almond Pudding (RM6.80). Although mango pudding was well made, I like the almond pudding. The almond pudding had a light and sufficient hint of almond aroma and taste, making the wobbly pudding a joy to eat. My other foodies on the other hand simply preferred the popular mango pudding because of the sweet fruity flavors.
Paradise Dynasty opened up Chinese cuisine on another level in catching up with today’s era. Bringing in refine and modern dishes to the table while retaining a certain level of Chinese heritage, the restaurant is simply a place for gourmet indulgence. Coupled with the opulent ambience and fusion dishes, Paradise Dynasty is a class on its own. Must orders are simply their Xiao Long Bao, La Mian and Radish Pastry!
