Ushering in Lunar New Year with
Chinese and Japanese Cuisine
Located
on one of the busiest streets in the city, Hotel
Maya Kuala Lumpur is joining in the festive Chinese New Year cheer with
offerings of Chinese set menus and Festive Yee Sang menu at their contemporary
dining venue at Still Waters.
This
pork free eatery features Japanese cuisine fused with European and Asian
flavours as well as contemporary Cantonese inspired cuisine by their talented
Chef Meng, Chef Zainurin bin Mohd Salleh and culinary team. Set is a modern
contemporary design; Still Waters also has a private dining area available in
addition to their main dining area flanked by the serene sounds of waterfall
backdrop.
For
the festive CNY set menu, reservations are a must. Still Waters offer three CNY
Set Menus starting from RM888nett to RM1388nett per table of 10 persons. CNY
Yee Sang menu is also available with 5 options of yee sang with assorted seafood.
We
had a sneak preview of various dishes from the three set menus. The dishes are
generous in portions and beautifully presented.
First
up, a Japanese Yee Sang with Condiments
to usher in the festive season with a Japanese twist. The bountiful platter is
filled with salmon slices, salmon roes, fish roes, seasoned baby octopus, jelly fish, Japanese seasoned seaweed salad,
Japanese fish cake, Japanese crab stick, cucumber, pickled radish, crisp
greens, pickled ginger, crushed nuts and crunchy pok chui. The yee sang sauce
is Chef Zainurin’s own concoction of plum sauce along with Japanese sesame
sauce.
The yee sang is well-received and easy to enjoy as there are plenty of familiar flavours deliciously pumped up by the nutty and tangy sauce. Plenty of textural components too that keeps the palate continuously satiated.
Next
up, the soup course of Braised Eight
Treasure Soup with Sea Cucumber, Crab Meat, Fish Lips, Dried Scallop, Fish Maw,
Mushroom and Beancurd was indeed a mouthful of pleasure. The thick bisque
is well-studded with all the premium ingredients that are favorites during the
season.
A
gorgeous golden presentation of the Oven-Baked
Roasted Chicken with Chinese Herbs had everyone at our table signing in
pleasure. The whiff of the Chinese herbs is enough to tantalize our taste bud
while the glorious chick with plump yellow skin smothered in a pool golden
gravy finished with poached bok choy, red dates and wolfberries is very
enticing at sight. The chicken has absorbed the flavours of the danggui, tong
sum and pak kei well and is also very moist and tender. A dish that won many
brownie points that evening…
A
classic approach of the Steamed Pearl
Garoupa with Mirin Sauce and Scallions is always a good way to showcase the
fresh and natural sweetness of the fish, lightly enhanced with sweet soy sauce.
The
unctuous and favorite salted egg steals the limelight in the Wok-Fried Prawn with Golden Salted Egg Yolk
Cereal. Literally, one simply cannot miss this finger-licking crustacean as
the flavours are simply moreish and irresistible. The sandy and creamy salted
egg yolk sauce with cereal is utterly yummy along with the large sweet and firm
prawns with lots of aromatic curry leaves.
To
curb that carb craving, the Aromatic
Garlic Fried Rice with Dried Duck Meat, Mushroom and Barbeque Chicken is
sufficiently satisfying. Fully loaded with lots of chopped ingredients, there
is also a good breathe of wok in the fluffy fried rice. The addition of finely
shredded lettuce gave the rice a nice lighter touch.
To
end the festive meal, a classic offering of Osmanthus Jelly and Steamed Homemade Nian Gao proved to be quite a
lovely yin and yang combination. The wobbly Osmanthus Jelly makes a refreshing
ending to the palate while the classic Steamed Homemade Nian Gao with fresh
grated coconut is always a crowd-pleaser.
